The new Westinghouse AP1000 type nuclear reactors are to be installed in the new builds at Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Georgia and the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station in South Carolina. They are the first new nuclear construction in 34 years in the U.S., and construction is to begin by the end of 2011, provided the reactor receives the final safety assessment report from the NRC as well as NRC approval for its construction and operation. The AP1000 type reactor is an advanced 1100 MW pressurized water reactor which is designed to better withstand disasters. The outer structure is so strong it can withstand the impact of a large airplane crashing into it and it is designed to automatically cool down over a 72-hour period even after external power is lost.
