How Understanding of Proper Packing Load Has Evolved

Valve packing needs a specific load to create a reliable seal. Over the years the main issue of debate in the industry has been how to apply that load with the best accuracy. When tightened in excess, valve packing can cause major damage to the valve and interfere with general operations, but if the load is too low, the valve packing will not be able to maintain an adequate seal. The resulting leakage can cause maintenance, efficiency and safety issues.
