Waste heat converted to power in sunny CA

GDT Tek sub RTR Global Investments is installing a 150kw waste-heat-to-electricity unit in a Napa County landfill. Heat that is normally lost during combustion of landfill gas will be harnessed to generate up to 1.5 mw of electricity. This is part of a larger $23 million project planned to capture energy at six Bay Area landfills. Eventually the various plants on the landfill sites are to produce 9mw of power to supply nearly 12,000 homes for one year. According to Bo Linton, president of GDT Tek, the company’s patented technology works like an air-conditioner in reverse. A non-polluting mixture of refrigerants in a heat exchanger surrounding the 800- to 1200F exhaust of the methane generators captures heat energy to make steam at lower temperatures than a conventional water boiler. That steam then turns a turbine.
