Reducing fugitive emissions is a top priority in the battle against climate change. That is why Dutch company Mokveld Valves BV is introducing a unique zero emission innovation - the world’s first valve without dynamic seals to the atmosphere.Mokveld has incorporated an electric actuator inside its new valve, eliminating the stem seal to atmosphere entirely.

Mokveld, a global provider to the gas and oil industry with expert knowledge and advanced engineered valve systems for critical control and safety applications, recently presented a virtual workshop about its low shear Typhoon Valve System.

Mechanical fail-safe solutions exist for electric driven valves, however mainly for on-off applications. For control valves often the only solution is ‘stay-put’ upon electric power failure since for mechanical fail-safe the electric actuator shall overcome both the thrust to move the valve and the spring force.

The hydrocarbon market is experiencing an electrification and Mokveld is part of that with electric actuated valves. At present, a vast amount of (control) valves in remote locations are actuated by natural gas and in view of sustainability, carbon footprint and environmental factors, this should be reconsidered.

Mokveld was selected to develop a customized replacement of a 36”plunger valve to solve the existing cavitation issues, due to the criticality of the Tesla Hydroelectric Facility for the local water supply system in Colorado Springs, USA, and previous relevant experience at other hydro plants.

Low shear technology developed by Typhonix and used in the Typhoon®  Valve Systems is the Innovation Award Winner of this year at ONS2018 in Stavanger, Norway.

Mokveld Valves BV, which has locations throughout the Americas, has announced it is the first valve manufacturer to have implemented a Functional Safety Management System for providing critical safety systems up to safety level SIL3, and to have it third party certified.
