Safety relief valves should be installed vertically upwards as other orientations can affect the performance of a safety relief valve. The API Recommended Practice 520 guidelines also state that the safety valve should not be installed at the end of a long horizontal pipe that does not normally have flow through it. That leads to condensation in the pipe and it may accumulate debris over a period, which may cause damage to the valve and/or interfere with its operation.
