A Black & Veatch subsidiary and PCL Industrial Construction Co. have been awarded a USD 583 million contract from Louisville Gas & Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company to design and build a natural gas-fueled power plant. The new plant will replace older coal-fired units that will be retired by 2016 and will be named Cane Run Unit 7.
The new facility will provide up to 600 megawatts of capacity which is the equivalent to powering about 660,000 homes and will be fueled by cleaner burning natural gas. The generating facility will incorporate combined cycle technology and will feature the latest Siemens advanced technology gas turbines.
The joint-venture partnership will be known as Bluegrass Power Constructors and will provide full engineering, procurement and construction services for the new plant. Black & Veatch wholly owned subsidiary Overland Contracting Inc. will provide engineering, electrical construction and startup services and PCL will provide construction services.
Black & Veatch’s global energy business President and CEO, Dean Oskvig said, “The new Cane Run combined cycle plant will provide a reliable, low-cost and flexible energy supply to the people of Kentucky. The combined PCL and Black & Veatch team brings unparalleled project execution capabilities to our client and the people of Kentucky.
