MSS Publishes Revised Standards for PTFE V-Ring Packing Sets and Instrument Valves

The Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) of the Valve and Fittings Industry announces that SP-149-2023, Preformed Elastomeric and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) V-Ring Packing Sets for Waterworks Valves, has been revised and published by MSS.

Standard Practice (SP)-149 has served the industry for over 27 years; establishing material, surface finish, dimensional, and testing requirements for preformed V-ring packing sets, packing chambers, and valve stems. This Standard Practice applies to homogeneous elastomeric and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) V-ring packing for gray iron and ductile iron quarter-turn and multi-turn valves for waterworks applications with a maximum service temperature of 150 °F (66 °C). SP-149 continues to be maintained under the consensus of MSS Technical Committee 308, Packing & Gaskets.

The MSS also announces that SP-99-2023, Instrument Valves, has been revised and published by MSS. Standard Practice (SP)-99 has served as the industry norm for over 36 years; applying to small valves and manifold valves developed for and predominantly used in instrument, control, and sampling piping systems. This Standard Practice covers steel and alloy valves of nominal pipe size (NPS) 2 and smaller, and pressure ratings of 15 000 psi (103.4 MPa) and lower at 100 °F (38 °C). See MSS SP-105 for instrument valves involving code applications. SP-99 continues to be maintained under the consensus of MSS Technical Committee 115, Instrument Valves.

The revised Standard Practices, MSS SP-149-2023, and MSS SP-99-2023, are now available from authorized U.S. and global distributors. It has been published in an electronic version (PDF) and in book format.
