Lithuania signs agreement to purchase US LNG

Lietuvos Duju Tiekimas (LDT) – the state-owned Lithuanian gas trader – has signed an agreement to purchase LNG directly from the US for the first time.

LDT, which is a part of Lietuvos Energija – the state-owned energy group – signed an agreement with Koch Supply & Trading in 2016 for LNG supplies throughout 2017. The agreement was signed with a unit of Cheniere Energy, and reportedly comes as part of Lithuania’s plans to diversify its gas suppliers and decrease its reliance on Gazprom.

According to a spokesman for LDT, Cheniere Energy is expected to supply the LNG from a US field, adding: “It will be the first time Lithuania imports gas from the US.”
