Green groups sue EPA for coal waste rules

The Environmental Protection Agency is being sued by Green groups to force the completion of the long-planned national regulations that will govern the disposal of coal ash, a power plant waste product.

The suit has been filed by several groups including the Sierra Club, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Appalachian Voices, the Environmental Integrity Project, etc. The groups have stated that the absence of national standards requiring safe disposal have allowed for the widespread release of pollutants from coal ash (such as mercury, lead and arsenic) to air, water and soil and have filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, saying that by failing to update its regulations, the EPA is violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
