Fire academy donation from SUNOCO refinery

The Salem County Fire Academy in New Jersey recently hosted an Open House and live fire demonstration, using the Academy’s donated industrial firefighting prop. The newly installed prop is used to simulate fires that are seen in the petrochemical and chemical industries and was donated by SUNOCO Logistics Eagle Point Refinery. The props donated include a three-module prop, control manifold, and two 1,000-gallon LP gas tanks.

Simulation scenarios that may occur at facilities were demonstrated using LP or natural gas, including securing several valves. Attendees at the event included county fire departments and representatives from PSEG and Chemours. The Academy’s duty officer and retiree of SUNOCO Eagle Point Refinery, Instructor John Austin, led the training.

The donated props have enabled the Fire Academy to provide fire service education outside of the public sector. The Academy plans on providing training to private as well as commercial entities, having begun their first training in October.
