ExxonMobil and Calpine Enter CO₂ Transport Agreement

ExxonMobil to transport CO₂

ExxonMobil Corporation signed an agreement with Calpine Corporation to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons of CO₂ per annum (MTA) from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center to a cogeneration facility near Houston, TX.

The agreement is part of Calpine’s Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project devised to capture the facility’s CO₂ emissions. This will enable a 24/7 supply of low-carbon electricity to Texas customers as well as steam to nearby industrial facilities.

More specifically, Calpine’s project expects to produce approximately 500 megawatts of low-carbon electricity. This is enough to power more than 500,000 homes and steam for industrial use. Engineering, permitting, and other development activities are currently underway.

The CO₂ from Calpine’s facility will tie into ExxonMobil’s CO₂ pipeline system, located along the U.S. Gulf Coast, and support enhanced oil recovery and permanent CO₂ sequestration. The advancement of this project remains contingent on supportive government policy, customer power sales agreements, and regulatory permits.
