Diamond Offshore to build deepwater rig

Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. subsidiary entered into a contract with Keppel AmFELS shipyard in Brownsville, Texas to construct a moored semisubmersible rig. The rig which is to be called the Ocean Onyx is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2013 at an approximate total cost of USD300 million including commissioning, project management and spares. It will have a variable deck load of 5,000 long tons, quarters for 140 personnel, five-ram blowout preventer and be designed to operate in water depths up to 6,000 feet. With the addition of the Ocean Onyx to their three ultra-deepwater drillships, Diamond Offshore believes that the rig should be ideal to meet emerging segment demands and continue the fleet renewal process. The rig will be constructed using an existing hull from a Diamond cold stacked unit which should result in the Ocean Onyx being built and in service at half the cost and time of a newly built rig.
