Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) is constructing a second biodiesel plant in Brazil. The facility will be built in Joaç aba, Santa Catarina, and will be adjacent to the existing ADM soybean crushing and refining facilities which currently process nearly 475,000mt of soybeans and can refine approximately 73,000 metric tons of soybean oil annually. The new plant will have an annual biodiesel production capacity of 164,000mt, which will increase ADM’s biodiesel capacity in Brazil by more than 50 percent to nearly 110,000mt per year. This will be the first biodiesel plant in the state of Santa Catarina, which boasts an ample supply of soybeans produced mainly by small family farms. ADM’s expansion will help meet the increased demand for biodiesel in Brazil, which has resulted from the recent implementation of 5% biodiesel blends in 2010.
