American President Harry Truman once said: “Give me a one-handed economist. All my economists say, ‘on the one hand…’, ‘but on the other…”. Pick any complex problem, being State economy or plant maintenance, and odds are that it will have several possible solutions, each with pros and cons. When an economist (or a maintenance engineer) says “This is the way to go and there is no alternative”, you should raise an eyebrow. Take for example the issue of valve maintenance. Is run-to-failure an adequate maintenance strategy? Maybe it is, maybe it is not. In this article we will explore some maintenance concepts and attempt an answer to this question.
