Bill of Materials (BOM) is one of many expressions used in the industrial world that often mean different things for different people. Everybody agrees it is a list, but a list containing what? For a valve manufacturer, it may be the parts and materials stated in the drawing. Someone working with a software for maintenance management may think the list contains the parts in the valve drawing, along with correspondent part numbers and indications of quantities for spare parts. If someone was planning for a plant turnaround that requires a valve replacement, the BOM includes the whole valve and all the materials needed for the replacement, such as bolts and gaskets. It is time to have a more concrete definition for Bill of Materials for valve maintenance and replacement.
