Siemens to supply 116 wind turbines to 267-MW in the US

Siemens Energy has been awarded a major order from Portland General Electric Company, a fully integrated public utility in Oregon, for 116 units of its SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines. Each turbine has a 2.3MW capacity and a rotor diameter of 108m. The 267-MW Tucannon River Wind Power Plant will be located in Columbia County, Washington. The scope of supply includes the delivery and installation of the 116 wind turbines as well as a five-year service and maintenance agreement. Installation of the wind turbines is scheduled to begin in 2014. When the project is completed in 2015, it is expected to generate enough power to serve approximately 84,000 households.
The project was formerly known as Lower Snake River Phase II. It is located adjacent to Lower Snake River Phase I, a 343-MW wind power plant completed in 2012 and also featuring Siemens wind turbines. Siemens will be assembling the 116 nacelles and hubs at its nacelle assembly facility in Hutchinson, Kansas, which also supplied the nacelles for the Lower Snake River Phase I project when the assembly facility was opened in 2010. The 348 blades for the Tucannon River project will be manufactured at the company’s plant in Fort Madison, Iowa.
Wind power is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2012, revenue from the Portfolio totalled about EUR 33B, making Siemens one of the world’s largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies. In the same period, Siemens’ products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 330Mt, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo.
