A spokeswoman for NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG)has said the company is in discussions to find potential buyers for a planned power plant in Carlsbad, California. The project received a license from the California Energy Commission last year, but still needs financing and a number of key permits. The application was filed with the commission in 2007 and is valid for five years from the time it was received. Seemingly the project will be a 558 MW combined cycle natural gas-fired facility. NRG is estimating construction will begin in the first quarter of 2014, with the plant coming online by 2016, according to the Union-Tribune. The schedule is contingent on the execution of a power purchase agreement, successful financing of construction and timely issuance of any remaining permits that need to be obtained. Any contract discussions about a pending power purchase agreement are confidential, and there is no information when the remaining permits might be secured.
