Indiana plant sold to Texas demolition company

BTU Solutions, a Sugar Land, Texas-based company that specializes in demolishing power plants has bought State Line Energy, a former coal plant at the northwestern tip of Hammond, Indiana near Lake Michigan. The plant stopped generating in March when Dominion Resources shuttered the plant in lieu of paying for costly environmental upgrades.

The amount of the sale has not been disclosed. According to Dominion spokesman Jim Norvelle, the deal was structured to ensure the demolition of the former plant, which was in operation for over 80 years.

The facility will be demolished by BTU Solutions in an 18 to 24 month period with the cost of demolition estimated at USD$15 million to USD$25 million. The site is expected to be used long-term for energy related purposes.
