New Surry coal-plant hearings scheduled

A new public hearing has been scheduled by the Surry County Planning Commission for Old Dominion Electric Cooperative’s proposed coal-fueled power plant. The controversial proposal to build the Cypress Creek Power Station, a 1,500megawatt coal-burning plant to be built on 1,200acres in Dendron, Virginia was met with a lawsuit that rendered the Commission’s 2010 approval of the company’s rezoning and conditional-use permits void. Five county residents won a lawsuit that alleged that residents were not properly informed and notified of the Dendron Town Council’s intent to vote immediately following the board’s February 2010 hearing. The new public hearing has been set for 27 February 2012 at the county’s government complex. Should the proposal be approved by the board, the applications will then move to the Dendron Town Council for a hearing and vote. The first round of hearings divided the community, drawing a large turn out of supporters and opponents. Surrounding areas have also begun to discuss the possible environmental issues and regional economic development impact.
