Colombia pipeline a first

The Poliducto Pozos Colorados-Galan Pipeline project consists of a 507 Km pipeline running from the Santa Marta Caribbean Terminal to the Galan Receiving Station at the refinery in Barrancabermeja. This project will be the first pipeline constructed in Colombia to use state of the art technology like TPI (Third Party Intrusion) based fiber optics (for leak detection). The bi-directional pipeline will be used to transport diesel, naphtha, bio-diesel and palm oil, but not crude oil. Starting in 2010, diesel from outside of Colombia will be pumped to the Barrancabermeja Refinery to mix with local diesel in order to reduce the sulfur content from 5000 PPM to 30 PPM, to meet with the Colombian compliance acquired in the Kyoto Protocol. The new pipeline will increase the flow from 30,000 bpd to 45,000 bpd, and ultimately will be handling 60,000 bpd. When the project is completed, it will place Colombia well ahead of the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol.
