The API has announced the publication of the API Standard 16FI (API Std 16FI), Frac Iron Guidelines and Requirements. The first edition standard establishes safety guidelines for temporary high-pressure equipment (also known as frac iron).
Frac iron is used for hydraulic fracturing operations during oil and gas production and stimulates fluids (water, sand, and chemicals) from pumps to the wellhead. It’s comprised of piping, hoses, connections, manifolds, and pressure-relief devices. The equipment supports critical procedures, such as plug-and-perf and ball-drop operations.
Since frac iron operates under extreme pressures, protecting workers while supporting environmental safety are critical priorities. API Std 16FI was developed to address these priorities by providing clear guidance for the design, manufacturing, and use of frac iron equipment, supporting safer working conditions and heightened operational integrity at well sites.
